“Honest Abraham Lincoln will get a large majority of the soldiers votes”

Civil War–dated ALS signed “Edwin Alldritt, Co. A 2nd Regt. U.S. Sharpshooters,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, October 24, 1864. Letter to his parents, written while encamped near Petersburg. In part (spelling edited for readability): “There is nothing new taken place here since I last wrote you picket firing and cannonading every day more or less we lose some men every day…most in our brigade killed or wounded by stray bullets and shell coming in camp…McClellan’s stock is low here…Honest Abraham Lincoln will get a large majority of the soldiers votes our company all voted for Lincoln but the Captain…The 124th New York Regt. went two hundred and thirty for Lincoln and thirty for McClellan so you can see by that the boys are going to stand by old Abe our Regt. about all voted for Abe Lincoln there was three or four voted for McClellan and they did not know any thing had no mind of their own could be bought for a drink of whiskey.” In fine condition. Accompanied by an original mailing envelope and a few pages of a diary or log kept by Alldritt.
