ALS signed “Oliver,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Supreme Judicial Court letterhead, April 15, 1898. Letter to Hibernia, in part: “It is hard to write while you are unsettled, distressed, and on the wing. All that I can do is send you little messages of affection…I have taken the…stateroom for June 25—but if war should come I should hesitate to leave this country…Do you have any doubt that it would be possible for me to get an appreciable time with you…somewhere?…My views about the war have changed somewhat. I think it looks probable that the Maine was blown up from the fort…it would warrant our going to war if we saw fit. I also think that we are perfectly warranted on the ground of our interests…But I am not very eager for an inglorious contest.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Holmes’s own hand. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
