British author (1824–1889) regarded as the first British detective story writer. ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, June 11, 1865. Letter to John Edmund Reade, in full: “I am seldom in London now, and I only came to town for a day or two last night, and found your kind letter here, with the presentation copy of the last edition of your Poetical Works which accompanies it. Pray accept my best thanks for your volumes as well as for your friendly expressions towards myself, and allow me to add my congratulations on the appearance of this last and completest edition of your Poems. It is given to a few men to devote themselves as you have done to the highest of all forms of Art—and it is given to fewer still to see the monument of that devotion complete in their own lifetimes.” In fine condition.
