Wonderful collection of correspondence between legendary actor John Gielgud and his partner Martin Hensler with their friend, New York artist Sidnee Livingston, consisting of approximately 55 handwritten letters, the majority of which are penned by Hensler, with eight filled out and signed by Gielgud. One letter, dated January 20, 1982, in part: “We have just returned from spending Christmas and the New Year in South Africa, to find your monotype safely waiting for us. It’s lovely and you are an absolute dear to be so kind. Thank you…I rode an ostrich, was chased by an elephant and can even tell you how to sex a crocodile not that you would be remotely interested. They all eat a perfectly disgusting amount out there and I am rather fat but the friendliness of the natives was most marked and we could almost forget that we are getting on a bit really. All that beach life is so very physical somehow.” Also includes a few telegrams, a secretarial letter, and seven unsigned photos of Gielgud throughout his career. Housed in a modern three-ring binder. In overall fine condition. Accompanied by the original envelopes for the eight Gielgud letters, each addressed in his own hand.
