Description

Charles Dickens

ALS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.25 x 6, Gad’s Hill Place letterhead, October 22, 1863. Letter to the Earl Russell, in part: “Accept my most earnest thanks for your more than kind note. I am disappointed, of course—the more so, because I had seen him always at work, and had the strongest belief in his power to do what was needed, as well as any other well-educated youth—but if he had succeeded in the most brilliant manner, I could not have been more grateful to you than I am. I shall always treasure the remembrance of your goodness. You will excuse my adding from my heart that I would rather, in right of old faith in you and long admiration of you, stand so indebted to you as I am, to you, than any other statesman in Europe.” Affixed to a same-size sheet. In very good to fine condition, with a trimmed bottom edge and edge stains to second page from adhesive. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
