Artist known for his distinctive woodcuts and participation in the WPA during the Depression era (1894–1981). Brilliant original vintage signed ink and watercolor sketch of a Josephine Baker–esque entertainer entitled “Stepping High, The Chocolate Kid—Harlem” on an off-white 6 x 9.5 album page, signed in the lower right, “R. A. Loederer, 1934.” In fine condition. A woodcut by Loederer featuring a similar image is held in the National Gallery of Art, and a nearly identical silhouette portrayal appears on the cover of his 1932 book Voodoo Fire in Haiti.
