Two presidents issue a patent for “a Pivot Gun Carriage”

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 11.75 x 15, November 29, 1814. A patent issued to “Luke M. Laighton, a Citizen of the United States [who] hath alleged that he has invented a new and useful improvement being a Pivot Gun Carriage.” Signed at the conclusion by President Madison and countersigned by Secretary of State Monroe as well as Attorney General Richard Rush. The seal and ribbon affixed to the left edge remain intact but the second page is absent. In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds and signatures light but legible. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
