Ink notation below in another hand indicates his age at the time of signing. In fine condition. Barnum purchased Jumbo, the largest elephant in captivity, from the London Zoo in 1882 and turned him into an instant international superstar. After making his American debut at Madison Square Garden just weeks before Barnum signed this card, he remained one of the greatest attractions in the famous touring circus until his tragic death in a railway accident in 1885.
