Letter to Mrs. Barton, in part: “Your most encouraging Soldier’s day letter arrived some time ago, owning to my familiarity with a Paris Hospital I was prevented from answering…However now I am rapidly regaining and hope in a few weeks to be fit and ready for the front as before….My what I would give for one little glimpse of dear old California, but why wish when there’s a war on.
