Description

Paul Dukas

French composer (1865–1935) best known for ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,’ interpreted to delightful effect in Disney’s Fantasia. ALS in French, two pages on two adjoining sheets sides, 4.5 x 7, black-bordered letterhead, April 7, 1908. Letter to a musician regarding his piano sonata. In part (translated): "I think that, after 8 years, I know better than anyone else the flaws of this work which earns me artistic support such as yours. I consider it as something foreign; I am not unaware of its heaviness nor of its difficulty. And I clearly feel that if I had to re-write this sonata today, I would probably do it on the same basis but I would give myself different limits. If however I tended to exaggerate to myself its flaws, your letter reassures me about its qualities that make up for them. It allows me to convince myself that, not having shed the former, it still retained some of the latter that, in my desire to express too much at once I nevertheless did not entirely miss my goal, which is always a possible thing.” In fine condition. Considered one of the most difficult and intellectual of all 20th century solo piano works, Dukas published ‘Piano Sonata in E-flat minor’ in 1901. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
