Russian dramatist, opera librettist, and translator (1850–1916) and the younger brother of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. ALS in Cyrillic, signed “M. Tchaikovsky,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8.25, January 2, 1909. Long letter to Serge Tanayev. In part (translated): "That I didn’t write to you is not a big trouble, the trouble is that I’ve deceived you as concerns financial support. I, of course, could have found one way or another of delivering money to you, but I was exhausted from work when in Petersburg, and here I faced so many obstacles to finding your place of residence that I started reproaching myself, and thinking of you I put the blame on you: ‘It’s of his own choosing not to write to me!’ Now I have neither excuses nor money to send to you. Darling, please, wait till the beginning of February, I count on getting a certain amount from the Playwright and Composer Society. Three weeks have already passed since I came to Rome…I’m finishing my translation of Kuno Fischer (20 pages left) and will start editing it for publication. I myself am not writing anything; I tried to read something new (Summer Masks), but gave it up with a feeling of disgust and boredom at seeing such incredible quantity of words used in vain. As about our common friends, I frequently meet Sergey Volkonsky. Borisevich has not arrived yet…I started taking lessons. Guess what?—the Polish language. I’ll need it greatly for one job I’m going to undertake. Yesterday I took my first lesson—very exciting.” In fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
