Description

Louis Lebegue Duportail

French military leader (1743–1802) who served as chief engineer of the Continental Army during the American Revolution and was the French minister of defense at the beginning of the French Revolution. LS in French, signed “Duportail,” one page, 8 x 11.5, August 3, 1791. Angry letter concerning diplomatic relations. In part (translated): "I have received…a copy of the [letter] you addressed to the Minister of the Palatinate Elector. It surprised me greatly. The motive which guided you on that occasion is without doubt praiseworthy, but you would surely have abstained from writing this letter if you had thought, because you would have seen how it could have displeased the Elector with this government. It is easy to see that the circumstances require a great prudence in our attitude towards the Princes of the Empire. Furthermore, when, in the future, any other affair is to be handled with the Princes, please refer it entirely to the care of M. de Luckner.” In fine condition, with a trimmed bottom edge. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
