Description

David G. Farragut

LS signed “D. G. Farragut,” one page, lightly-lined, 6.5 x 11.75, August 13, 1860. Written from the US Steam Sloop Brooklyn, in full: “I have the honor to inform the Department that Cap’t Engle informed me, this morning that he was ready to sail and although the weather was very unpropitious, blowing very heavily from the S’th and E’st I got underweigh immediately and put to sea at 11.30 a. m. today. I have to report that one of my Engineers, who had permission to go on shore at Old Point for the evening, took the liberty of going to Norfolk (I presumed) without my permission and consequently I have to report him as a deserter. He is no loss to the service for although he conducted himself very well until he was examined he has lately been disposed to drink.” In very good to fine condition, with trimmed left edge and scattered spots of discoloration. Accompanied by a portrait of Farragut bearing a printed facsimile signature. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
