Description

Theodore Dreiser

ALS, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.75 x 6.25, 165 West 10 Street letterhead, August 30, 1915. Letter of condolence to the widow of Edwin Martin, in part: “I do not need to say to you I am sure how sorry I am that your wonderful husband has gone. To me Martin always seemed one of the natural elders and wise men of the world. He was so truly sage and catholic and with a well spring of gentle humor hidden away…which was as refreshing as his wisdom was appealing. I know how you feel, but I take it that you look at it as a great privilege and blessing to have had him for so long.” Dreiser adds a brief postscript, “For me life could have better taken 10,000 and left Martin.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Dreiser’s own hand. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
