Enormous Lovell & Aldrin Bank of Pad 19 gag check, 26 x 12, filled out in type and signed by James Lovell and Buzz Aldrin, “James A. Lovell, Jr.,” and “Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr.,” payable to Guenter Wendt for 1,000,000 Deutsche marks, stamp-dated November 11, 1966, with the two previous days struck through. Memo field reads, “Employment Compensation,” with the check number listed as “GT–12.” Signed on the reverse by Wendt and stamped as being from his personal collection. In very good to fine condition, with tape and pin holes to edges. Accompanied by an official glossy 8 x 10 NASA photo of the moment Lovell presented Wendt with the check, signed in blue felt tip, “G. F.–12 crew gift to me; at the end of the program: an 1,000,000 DM unemployment check. Guenter F. Wendt, Pad Leader,” signed on the reverse by Wendt and stamped as being from his personal collection. Also accompanied by a Wendt-signed letter of authenticity, in part: “This make-believe 1 million dollar ‘bank draft’ was presented to me in appreciation for my spacecraft checkout work and signed by the Gemini 12 astronaut crew of James A. Lovell, Jr. and Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr. The presentation…was made in the White Room atop Complex 19, launch site for all Gemini astronauts, on November 11, 1966, prior to NASA’s final manned Gemini launch into space from Cape Canaveral, Florida.” A wonderful joke gift for the longtime NASA pad leader, and further evidence of the close friendships he forged with history’s greatest explorers.
