TLS signed “D. E.,” one page, 7 x 10, personal letterhead, March 26, 1964. Letter to US National Security Advisor and Eisenhower's former special assistant, Robert Cutler, in full: “Recently you seem to be having more than your fair share of battles with doctors; I do hope that you are recovering from your illnesses and may soon be able to get your book completed. The tragedy to your great-niece, Clare, must have been a terrible shock to you and her immediate family. It is always saddening to learn of the death of a young, promising individual and when one has given to the individual a great measure of his affection it is truly a catastrophe. Mamie joins me in sending deep sympathy to you and to other members of the family. We have had more than our share of winter days this year in the desert but today is one of those described by Lowell as ‘What is so rare as a day in June? Then, if ever, come perfect days.’ Today, except for the Palm trees, I could feel that it is a June day on our Gettysburg Farm. Take care of yourself and keep me informed as to your progress—that is, whenever you feel like it.” Framed and in fine condition. Accompanied by a first edition of Cutler’s book, No Time for Rest, signed and inscribed by Cutler on the first free end page. Also accompanied by a first edition of the referenced poem by James Russell Lowell, The Vision of Sir Launfal, which includes an ink signature of Lowell, “J. R. Lowell,” on the reverse of an off-white 3.25 x 1.75 calling card belonging to author William Dean Howells. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
