War-time Lincoln response to an autograph-seeker

ALS as President  “A. Lincoln,” one page, 4.25 x 7.75, very fine. Executive Mansion letterhead, Washington, May 7, 1864.  In full: “Herewith I give you my autograph, as you request Yours truly A.Lincoln . Cloth -matted and framed with an image of Lincoln. This same day May 7, 1864, H. E. Wing relayed to Lincoln an eyewitness account of the devastating Union losses at the Battle of the Wilderness. However in spite of such news, Lincoln cooperated with the wishes of an unidentified autograph seeker by penning this wonderfully preserved example .A similar request for Lincoln’s autograph during the war to benefit the Philadelphia Sanitary Fair sold previously for $ 27,400 Christies Dec.3, 2007 Lot 153. Unpublished and not recorded in Basler.
