TLS signed “Gerald R. Ford,” two pages, 7 x 10.5, White House letterhead, October 4, 1974. Letter to Everett Fisher, intended to be used as a speech in Ford’s absence at an upcoming Yale alumni meeting, in full: “I was just informed by Tony Mayer of the forthcoming Assembly of the Association of Yale Alumni which is scheduled for October 17 in New Haven. Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to be there with you at this important meeting, but unfortunately previous commitments make it impossible. Because I am unable to attending this gathering, I would greatly appreciate it if you would extend to all the delegates of the Association of Yale Alumni my warmest best wishes from a fellow alumnus. I note from your agenda that you will be examining ‘Trends in Yale Athletics,’ and you will undoubtedly be discussing the unique role that physical fitness and athletic competition play in providing a willingness by Yale alumni to meet the challenges of the future with poise and confidence. As you may know, in my years at Yale, as both a law student and football coach, I pursued the dual objective of ‘Scholarship’ and ‘Athletics.’ It is a search for the proper balance between these two which is the theme of your Assembly and an important consideration for Yale itself. The 90,000 of us who are constituents of the AYA count on you to translate our affection for Yale—the Yale we know and love and the Yale we believe in—into guidance for a university that must continue to provide leaders for our great country. I trust that the Assembly V will be most successful and highly productive.” In very fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, as well as a letter of transmittal from White House aide Frank Pagnotta. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
