Description

Thornton Wilder

ALS signed “T. N.” (Wilder’s middle name was “Niven”, and he occasionally signed with his first and middle initials for close friends), four pages on two sheets, 6 x 7, Deepwood Drive letterhead, July 11, 1970. Letter to author James Leo Herlihy, in part: “Two weeks ago on Martha’s Vineyard I suddenly lost almost total vision in my left eye. Rushed to specialist in New Haven. (I’ll be brief about all this.) Doctor says less an ocular problem than a circulatory one. Sent to another doctor for general checkup. Passed with high marks. So: pills, rest, restrictions on use of eyes—Must hang around New Haven for a number of weeks…Just out of respect for my friend Herlihy’s ‘household gods’ I went into several bookstores to buy a Hesse. I had been told that Demian is the best of the shorter ones. All the stores had Steppenwolf and Sidhartha [sic] and Narcissus and Goldmund by the scores, but only two…had Demian. I brought it home and started reading it (on my limited reading-time allowance!) and now I can’t find it anywhere in the disordered clutter of my study. But I’ll go and hunt for another tomorrow. I’ve been told that there is a kindly reference to my work in his journals.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Wilder’s own hand. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
