Louisiana politician (1845–1921) who served as the the ninth Chief Justice of the United States from 1910 to 1921. TLS as chief justice signed “E. D. White,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 6.75, February 7, 1911. Letter to Charles Strauss concerning his inability to attend the New York County Lawyers Association Dinner for Charles Evans Hughes, in part: “My inability to accept results from the fact that my official duties here are of such a character as to cause it to be impossible for me to leave Washington on the date named.” Recipient adds a handwritten notation to upper right corner, “Judge Parker, Perhaps this should be read & commented on.” In fine condition, with toning to edges and some rippling to signed page.
