Morrison R. Waite

Ohioan politician (born 1816) who served as the seventh Chief Justice of the United States from 1874 to his death in 1888. ALS as chief justice signed “M. R. Waite,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 7.75, December 25, 1876. Letter to Cephas Brainerd, in part: “It will be quite impossible for me to accept the very kind invitation of the Committee of your Y. M. C. A. to be present at the coming anniversary meeting. I have made it an invariable rule not to absent myself from my duties here if it can possibly be avoided.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds and slight toning. Provenance: The Everett Fisher Collection. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
