Description

Sought-after Emperor Taisho military award

Scarce DS in Japanese, one page, 23 x 18, circa 1912–1926. Untranslated document in which the emperor of Japan confers the Fifth Class, Order of the Golden Kite upon a distinguished member of the military. Includes the award medal with black lacquered presentation case. Tightly rolled and in very good to fine condition.

Established in 1890 by Emperor Meiji, the Order of the Golden Kite was a military award commemorating the mythic Jimmu Tenno, the ‘Romulus of Japan.’ It was awarded to soldiers and military officers who demonstrated bravery, leadership, or command in battle. This is one of the few orders made exclusively for the Japanese military, while most others could be given to civilians, diplomats, and other officials including those from other countries. The inclusion of the actual award badge enhances the desirability of this uncommon middle-class example. This is just the third document of Emperor Taisho that we have offered. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
