Description

Supremely rare early 1840s engraving—the earliest signed image of any president

Exceedingly rare 3.25 x 4.75 engraved portrait of Adams by Nathaniel Dearborn, signed across the top in black ink using his full name, “John Quincy Adams.” In fine condition, with some trivial surface scuffing near his first name. Adams is known to have ordered some of his portraits from Dearborn—a fellow Bostonian—around 1842, and other signed examples of this engraving are known but hardly ever appear. These are the earliest known signed images of any president and thus hold substantial historical value. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
