Description

LM Descent Engine Pintle Injector Sleeve

A spare titanium sleeve comprising the external structural element of the TRW Lunar Module Descent Engine (LMDE) Pintle Injector, measuring 5.75″ long and 3″ in diameter, labeled on the side with several different parts numbers, the first being: “QR 108506-1 C1, S/N 0166.” In fine condition. The injector was responsible for delivering fuel and oxidizer into the LMDE's combustion chamber. The LMDE was the first man-rated engine able to be controlled by throttle, enabled by this unique injector sleeve design. As it was movable with respect to the rest of the injector assembly, the motion of the sleeve simultaneously changed the gap in the fuel orifice and the size of the ports in the oxidizer outlets. The gap and port changes, commanded by computer and manual input from the Lunar Module pilot allowed for variable thrust to regulate the LM's descent rate down to the moon's surface.
