ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.75 x 8, personal monogrammed letterhead, January 28, 1961. Letter to John, in part: “Since we left New York, we have been travelling around Europe and on the way back home stopped at Cairo and Hong Kong. Our trip was quite fascinating, because at this time I was concentrated in sight-seeing forgetting the aspect of physical adventure. For Yoko and I you are regarded as the symbol of New York. We cannot imagine more refined New Yorker than you…I met Jean Cocteau in Paris on the dress-rehearsal of his plays. He looked so old and exhausted, but is still preserving a piece of youthful brilliance. I was told Herbert Machiz will give Off-Broadway production of my No-plays. If you would see the performance, will you let me know about your opinion?” In fine condition, with vertical and horizontal folds and scattered creasing. With his reference to meeting Jean Cocteau—one of Mishima’s influences—and comments on production of his own Noh Plays, this letter holds excellent theatre content. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
