TLS signed “Tennessee,” one page, 8.5 x 11, no date, but postmarked March 22, 1982. Letter to Waring Jones, in full: “I was very pleased to learn your opinion of my revised (post-Broadway) version of ‘Clothes for a Summer Hotel’ and I do hope that something will come of it, meaning, of course, a production. Duncan Weldon and his partner also admired it a great deal but were under the impression that there would have to be a star in it, such as Vanessa Redgrave or Maggie Smith. I don’t share this opinion and they have held onto it without apparent action for about six months. I think it would do better in England: lately my work seems to fare better abroad. I see no reason why players such as Janet Suzmann or Glenda Jackson would not be big enough as ‘names’ if that’s what one must go by. Personally I think a fine production is what you want under a strong director. I hope I will hear from you again. I am leaving Friday for a Goodman Theatre production in Chicago—’A House Not Meant to Stand.’ However it doesn’t have the poetry of ‘Clothes’ and I wish were going, instead, to see it done there, in England, even for a limited engagement.” Williams makes several handwritten emendations to the text, and adds a brief postscript in his own hand at the conclusion, “You can reach me at ‘Goodwin Theatre, 200 S. Columbus, Chicago.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds and slight creasing to right side. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed on the front and reverse in Williams’s own hand, with red collector’s ink notations to the front. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
