Description

Striking watercolor imagery by the acclaimed Swede

Popular Swedish painter and illustrator (1853–1919). Original artwork and poem accomplished by Larsson in ink and watercolor on an off-white 12 x 15.5 sheet, signed in the lower right, “C. L.,” March 22, 1884. Larsson writes a poem congratulating bookbinder Franz Beck on his 70th birthday, adding three cherubic figures representing himself, his wife Karin Larsson, and fellow artist Georg Pauli surrounding the poem. He also paints three small scenes from the town of Grez-sur-Loing. Attractively mounted, matted, and framed to an overall size of 21 x 25. Intersecting folds, toning, and a few rippled areas of paper loss to edges, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by a small book about Beck’s bindings. Franz Beck was a successful bookbinder in Stockholm and the father of artist Julia Beck, who came to know Larsson while living in the Grez-sur-Loing artist’s colony. An impressive piece with outstanding artistic associations. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
