Unpublished vintage glossy 4.25 x 3.25 photo of Hendrix in a suit and tie seated at a bar beside his girlfriend, Joyce Lucas, and his friend and bandmate, Larry Lee, annotated on the reverse in red ink by Lee, “Larry, Joyce & Jimmy, Culb [sic] Del Maroca [sic], Nashville, Tenn, 1963.” Also includes a vintage glossy 4 x 3.25 photo of Lee, pictured left, seated with four other unidentified men. In very good condition, with slight creasing and soiling, adhesive remnants to reverse, and scattered scuffs and discoloration to emulsion.
Lee first met Hendrix at Nashville’s Del Morocco nightclub in late 1962. Despite deeming Hendrix as ‘the worst guitar player’ he had ever heard, the pair began practicing together, and soon found themselves part of Bob Fisher and the Barnevilles’ month-long tour supporting The Marvelettes and Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions. While their days with the Barnevilles were short-lived, the two would take the stage together again six years later at Woodstock, giving what would become one of the most famous rock’n’roll performances of all time.
