Unique leatherbound autograph book related to the Ekensund Artist Colony on the Flensburg Fjord in Denmark, circa early 1900s, 5 x 7.5, containing several sketches, an oil painting, and several autograph quotes and poems by the artists. Most important is a full-page plein air oil painting of two figures crossing a brook by noted German-Danish photographer and artist Wilhelm Dreesen, boldly signed and inscribed on the adjacent page by Dreesen. Other artwork includes: two pages with watercolor sketches of small oceanfront properties with descriptions penned below, identified as being by “Papa”; a striking pen and ink sketch of a seascape with a city silhouetted in the background, signed with a verse in German on the adjacent page by “Adolf Leisner”; a detailed portrait of a high-society lady in profile, signed “J. E. Dobson”; and a pencil sketch of Lewis Carroll’s White Rabbit and quote by “Winnie Newman.” About twenty other names appear in the book and are noted as signed at Flensburg, though none seem to have been particularly notable artists. Some scattered foxing and edgewear, otherwise fine condition. Noted for its natural beauty and good lighting conditions, the Flensburg area attracted many painters and became a known artist’s colony by the mid-1870s.
