Description

ALS as president signed “J. Q. Adams,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, September 11, 1826. Letter to Secretary of the Treasury Richard Rush, in full: “I enclose herewith two letters to me; one from the Governor of New York, and the other from the Mayor of the city of New York and several others, recommending Edward Byrne for re-instatement as an Inspector of the Customs, an Office which it appears he formerly held—Mr. Byrne delivered there to me, himself, having come from New York to Boston for that purpose, and with them he exhibited some other papers, in further support of his application. The right of appointment is vested in the collector, subject I believe to some superintendence of the Treasury Department: To which I have accordingly referred Mr. Byrne, with a promise that I would refer also the enclosed papers to you. He expressed his intention of proceeding, himself to Washington; though I informed him that for the purposes of his application his papers would have as much as effect as his presence. His recommendations are highly respectable, and I am persuaded you will give them all the attention to which they are entitled.” Affixed to a slightly larger sheet. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, a small block of toning to upper right corner tip, and trivial mirroring to the writing. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
