Description

Felix Frankfurter

TLS signed “Felix,” one page, 8 x 10.5, Supreme Court of the United States letterhead, February 5, 1941. Letter to friend and Boston lawyer Arthur D. Hill, in part: “Without being invidious, what excited me most was your quotation from Lincoln’s Second Inaugural message and for the reason that only the night before I had read the whole of what you quote in part. Turn to the end and read the marvelous concluding paragraph which lead Marion to say what she has often thought, that Lincoln and Holmes are the two greatest American prose writers. What interested me most about your enclosure, however, was that the last sentence, as you wrote it, mutilated Lincoln. And so I went to Sandburg and found that you had quoted Sandburg accurately but that Sandburg misquoted Lincoln. Sandburg’s sentence is ‘We must disenthrall ourselves.’ While Lincoln wrote ‘We must disenthrall ourselves and then we shall save the country.’ You will agree that Lincoln’s second half excitingly drives home the point.” Frankfurter adds a brief handwritten postscript, “Mollie is the same dear child she was in our halcyon days, 1914.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature and a portion of the postscript). Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
