Samuel J. Tilden

American statesman (1814–1886) who served as governor of New York and was the unsuccessful Democratic presidential candidate in the infamous disputed election of 1876. Partly-printed DS, one page, 8 x 11.5, August 25, 1875. As governor of New York, Tilden certifies Oscar F. Thompson as “Notary Public in and for the County of Washington.” Crisply signed at the conclusion by Governor Tilden and countersigned by Secretary of State of New York Diedrich Willers, Jr. The affixed gold seal and purple ribbons remain intact with rubbing to the gilt foil of the seal. In very good condition, with scattered toning, soiling and chipping to edges, and some bands of discoloration from the purple ribbons. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
