Description

Fitzhugh Lee and James H. Wilson

Two letters accusing Secretary of War Elihu Root of lying about Leonard Wood’s gallantry at the Battle of San Juan Hill: an ALS signed “Fitz Lee,” one page, 8 x 10, February 13, 1904, in part: “It was told too that after Root testified that Wood behaved so gallantly at ‘Bloody Run’ an officer told him Wood was not there—that he (this officer) was not in the fight, but that he was with Wood or knew where he was every hour during that day”; and a TLS signed “James H. Wilson,” one page, 8 x 10.5, personal letterhead, February 17, 1904, in part: “I am not at all surprised that Root lied when he gave his favorable testimony in behalf of Wood’s alleged gallant behavior at the ‘Bloody Ford.’ I would not put it past him to lie on any occasion in behalf of a client.” Blue ink transfer to the lower left corners of both (apparently from a different letter), rusty staple marks to top edge, and some toning and creasing, otherwise overall fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
