Description

Jefferson Davis

Desirable Civil War–dated autograph endorsement, signed “J. D.,” penned on the reverse of a letter sent to him by Lieutenant T. P. A. Bibb, one page, 7.75 x 10, CSA Post Office Department letterhead, March 6, 1865. Forwarding the letter, Davis writes, in full: “Secy of War, this case will attract your attention from its merits and connections. Please advise me as to any thing which can be done consistently.” The initial request concerns an assignment for light service for Private Chapman Coleman, the grandson of deceased powerful senator and Attorney General John. J. Crittenden. In very good condition, with scattered staining affecting portions of Davis’s endorsement, and much of the other writing significantly faded. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
