Georgia politician (1812-1883) who served as vice president of the Confederacy during the Civil War. ALS signed “Alexander H. Stephens,” one page both sides, 5.25 x 8, September 3, 1876. Letter to James C. Hughes, in full: “Yours of the 31st inst. was received this morning. A collection of my speeches was published by Henry Cleveland in 1866—The work was published by the National Publishing Company in Philadelphia, Pa. I presume you can get a copy from there. Mr. Benton’s ‘Thirty Years’ view is a valuable work, and ought to be read by all students of American History; but is not what I call a reliable book—It is too partisan—His passions and prejudices color many portions of it—His dislike for Mr. Calhoun rendered it almost impossible for him to do Mr. Calhoun justice.” In very good condition, with partial separations to intersecting folds, traces of adhesive and mounting remnants, two small tears to lower right portion, and some slight scattered soiling.
