Official war damages reimbursement certificate stating that a “duly approved and registered claim” for $364.45 is on file, “as adjudicated under the act, entitled ‘An Act to authorize the liquidation of damages sustained by citizens of Pennsylvania during the late rebellion,’ and payable only when said claims shall be paid by the United States government.” Signed at the conclusion by Governor John W. Geary and Auditor General John F. Hartranft, both of whom were Union generals. In fine condition, with expected document wear and some paper loss to bottom edge. The citizens of Pennsylvania suffered particular hardship and property damage with the Gettysburg Campaign and the burning of Chambersburg; however, these claims were never paid out by the government.
