Description

Exceedingly rare portrait of the influential composer

Rare pearl-finish 7.5 x 9.5 portrait capturing Bartok’s penetrating stare, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “To Mr. Alexander Smallens, Bela Bartok, Philadelphia, 28. Dec. 1927.” Scattered creases, a few surface nicks, a tiny tear to the bottom edge, and trimmed edges, otherwise fine condition. This dates to the beginning of Bartok’s first American tour, which included a famous performance in Philadelphia with Stokowski. A sought-after and extremely rare format, this is the first Bartok signed photo we have offered in a decade. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
