TLS, one page, 8 x 10, October 2, 1960. Written from Plas Penrhyn, a letter to R. E. Muirhead, in full: “The rapidity with which we are moving towards a nuclear calamity convinces me that events are moving too quickly for the present policy of our Campaign. It is my conviction that the effectiveness of our Campaign is becoming dependent on its endorsing a programme of civil disobedience. I am going to make a statement at the first suitable opportunity expressing the hope that the Campaign will become convinced of the necessity of such a programme. I should like to ask your support in carrying this into action. A group of one hundred persons called ‘The Committee of 100’—for civil disobedience against nuclear warfare—is being formed and I should be grateful if you would join me on it. Could you favor me with an early reply?” Intersecting folds, staple holes to upper left corner, light soiling and creasing, and a few spots of discoloration and stray ink marks, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by a retained carbon copy of Muirhead’s reply, stating that he accepts the invitation. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
