Officer of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War (1752–1810) and second cousin to President George Washington. Lengthy ALS signed “Wm. A. Washington,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.25 x 9, November 5, 1785. Letter to Thomas Stone, in part: “I have thought proper to appoint you to represent me fully, & finally to settle my Claim with the State…I shall be much obliged to you to prevail on the Intendant to come to a final settlement as soon as possible.” Addressed on the reverse of the second integral page in his own hand. In very good condition, with partial separations to intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), scattered spots of discoloration, a few small areas of ink erosion, and slight show-through from writing to opposing sides.
