Description

Beautifully penned letter to Poe’s relative

ALS, one page, 7.25 x 9, no date. Letter to Edward Valentine. In part: “I find that my man and the landlord of this house, agree in thinking that my best plan—consistently with my arrangements for Milan—will be to leave at 3 o’clock…I must therefore, I fear, deny myself of the pleasure of dining with you.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds and mild toning. Edward Valentine was the cousin of Edgar Allan Poe’s foster mother, and was fond of Poe as he grew up; the writer would later unsuccessfully solicit funds from him to support a literary magazine. Dickens traveled to Milan at least twice—first in 1844, which he described in his 1846 travelogue Pictures of Italy, and again in 1853. A superb, boldly penned letter with multiple literary associations. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
