Partly-printed DS, signed “J. E. B. Stuart, 1st Lt. 1st Cav.,” one page, 17.5 x 7, January 1859. The lower portion of a muster-roll type accounting document. Signed in the lower right in crisp ink by Stuart and in the lower left by the commanding officer, W. S. Walker. In very good condition, with repaired separations to moderately toned intersecting folds; Stuart’s signature itself is an exceptionally clean, ideal example. Later on in the year of this document, Stuart was one of the officers who joined Robert E. Lee in suppressing John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry. A supremely desirable autograph of one of the Confederacy’s leading cavalrymen from a period of increasing tension in prewar America. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
