Renowned American painter (1778–1860) regarded as one of the finest portrait artists of his day, most famous for his paintings of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. ALS, one page, 4 x 6, embossed personal letterhead, December 19, 1859. Letter to Mr. Kidder, in full: “Amid the many engagements & interruptions that have beset us, I am very sorry not to be able to meet you at your home, so politely requested by you. In this regret Mrs. Peale joins me with kind regards to you and Mrs. Kidder.” A collector’s notation identifying Peale is penned at the top. In fine condition, with staple holes to top edge, scattered toning, and some very slight brushing to two letters of the signature. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
