Description

Hiram Powers

American neoclassical sculptor (1805-1873). Two items: lengthy ALS, one page both sides, 5.25 x 8.25, February 2, 1864. In part: “My son has prepared 50 photographs which will be sent by mail…My son has not yet photographed all my Ideal works. He takes the negatives from the marble—as I happen to have a pure piece, marked marble makes a bad negative…You will see how superior the Eve is to the others. It is from a very fine piece of marble”; and a 2.5 x 4.25 carte-de-visite photograph of one of his sculptures produced by his son, titled and signed on the mount by Powers, “‘Diana,’ Hiram Powers.” Partial separation to one of the letter’s folds, large ink notations to the body of the letter, show-through from writing to opposing sides, a small hole affecting some of the writing, and a chip to the bottom edge of the photo, otherwise overall fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
