American forger (1887-1950?) who forged letters from American luminaries. Joseph Cosey forgery of an ALS signed “A. Lincoln,” one page, 8 x 5.25, September 2, 1862. A directive issued to Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. In full: “Please allow this woman to pass safely over the lines into Culpepper County, Va. and return—command of Gen. Meade—For which this shall be sufficient warrant.” Double-matted and framed with two images to an overall size of 22 x 17. Central vertical and horizontal folds and scattered creases, otherwise fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
