Description

Boldly penned in the year of his magnum opus

ALS in French, signed “de Balzac,” one page, 5.5 x 8.5, December 1, 1846. Letter to “My dear Mr. Bouron,” in full (translated): “While absent, I am sending a kind lady to settle my small account, and enclosing with it a bill [payable to bearer] to provide for my needs; I am counting on your kindness to prevent bureaucracy waiting annoyance, she can sign all I would have to sign…as receipt and regularization.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds and light overall creases. Accompanied by an export certificate from the French Ministry of Culture. The year 1846 marked the publication of Balzac’s last great work, La Cousine Bette, another installment of his prodigious La Comedie humaine. Plumbing the depths of vice and virtue, Cousin Bette is one of the 18th century’s realist masterpieces and has drawn comparisons to Shakespeare's Othello and Tolstoy's War and Peace. Rather uncommon, Balzac’s letters are of the utmost desirability. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
