An aging Griffith signs an annuity contract to his idolatress

Trailblazing American filmmaker (1875–1948) best remembered for the 1915 classic The Birth of a Nation, and for co-founding United Artists. DS, signed “David Wark Griffith,” one page, 8 x 12, November 8, 1944. Assignment of annuity contract with Griffith naming Lillian Gish as the assignee of Griffith’s Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, signed twice in full by Griffith at the top portion, who also fills out Gish’s personal information. In fine condition, with staples holes and paperclip impressions to upper left corner, and expected document wear. A teenage Gish made her screen debut in D. W. Griffith’s Unseen Enemy, the first of a massive shared filmography that quickly turned the budding actress into one of Hollywood’s top stars. In spite of public opinion, Gish maintained her unwavering support of and gushing affection for her longtime friend and mentor, taking care of his finances and personally looking after Griffith until his death in 1948.
