John P. Marquand

American writer (1893–1960) originally best known for his Mr. Moto spy stories who later achieved popular success and critical respect for his satirical novels. Signed book: The Late George Apley. Later printing. Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1937. Hardcover with dust jacket, 5.75 x 8.25, 354 pages. Neatly signed on the first free end page in fountain pen. In very good condition, with moderate irregular toning to entire textblock, and scattered marks and areas of toning to dust jacket. The Late George Apley, which satirized upper class Boston through the Harvard-educated WASP title character, earned acclaim as Marquand’s first serious novel and received the Pulitzer Prize for the Novel in 1938. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
