Description

Charles Thomson

Patriot leader (1729–1824) in Philadelphia during the American Revolution and the secretary of the Continental Congress throughout its existence. Although a lesser-known revolutionary, Thomson was the only person to sign the Dunlap Broadside of the Declaration of Independence along with John Hancock. Manuscript DS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 9.5 x 15, January 12, 1786. Mortgage indenture from Joseph Price and his wife to William Dawson and Leonard Snowden. Signed at the conclusion by Charles Thomson and Peter Thomson, and also endorsed by William Rush and Mathew Irwin. Retains two affixed white paper seals. Several partial separations to intersecting folds, a large area of paper loss to the signed page, overall foxing and soiling, and a bit of mirroring to ink, otherwise very good condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
