Description

George Washington Carver

Partial ALS, unsigned, one page, both sides, 8.5 x 11, The Carver Products Company letterhead, no date. Page from a deeply spiritual letter concerning race to Jim Hardwick, a young Virginian and descendent of a slaveowner. In part: “I confess I wept a little bit for you when I came away because you did not understand me, but you are going to some day my friend, God is going to arrange it so that you will. I do sympathize with you keenly, you have tradition, environment, custom and everything like that to overcome. I do not. I can love you for the great spirit of Christ that is in you, shining through…thank God these barriers are through you going to be ‘burned away’…My friend, God gave you to me last year, it is a part of the mighty plan God has mapped out for you to do. You are a very essential part of my life…you helped me through one of the most trying periods of my life about this time last summer, when death and destruction seemed almost inevitable, your very dear letters came…assuring me that you and other good people were praying for the proper adjustment of the impending danger.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds and a couple tiny edge separations. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
