Rare TLS in French, signed “Moustapha Kemal,” one page, 8.25 x 10.75, August 9, 1923. Untranslated letter of thanks for a letter of congratulations on the occasion of the signing of the Treaty of Lausanne. Central vertical and horizontal folds (the vertical fold passing through the first letter of signature), a chip to the upper left corner, an insignificant repaired edge separation to the horizontal fold, mild creases and foxing, and slight mirroring of ink, otherwise fine condition.
After leading his people to victory in the Turkish War of Independence and refusing to sign initial proposed treaties that he believed would compromise the new nation’s sovereignty, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk finally accepted and signed the Treaty of Lausanne on July 24, 1923. Defining Turkey’s borders and giving them control of their own finances, capitulations, and the Straits, the treaty brought years of conflict to a close. A fantastic letter of thanks written at an absolutely crucial time in history, just two months before the Republic of Turkey was proclaimed and Ataturk was named its first president.
